MOVING BEYOND THE FEAR OF MAKING A RACIALIZED MISTAKE,

using mindfulness and creative expression

Moving Beyond the Fear of Making a Racialized Mistake

Two Saturdays, October 14th and 21st. Two sessions, 3 hours each 9 AM - 12 PM, PST

We invite you to an opportunity to be in connection with others and be transparent with yourself. We are creating more internal space for deeper learning. It is a given that all human interaction has a racial component.  We all have had moments when we’ve made a mistake or felt misunderstood in a racialized context; let’s explore how to navigate what we can glean about ourselves and create the conditions of bravery to step in again and again in order to create the world we want. Using somatic tools and art we will do the inner work needed to build capacity for this outer change. We want to live in a world where we can all interact from our humanity.  Join us to go deep for four weeks. Who is welcome: all folks who identify as white (aka white bodied). Come with an open heart and a willingness to be connected. Apply below.

Ashnie Butler

My story starts on the island of Trinidad with roots going back to Southern India. I have lived on the East and West Coast of the United States, currently residing in Portland, Oregon with my teenager. My passion for cooking took me to culinary school and started my journey of learning about cultures and people through their food. My own Caribbean culture is rich with a mix of Indian, African, Chinese, and British influences, so much to garner about colonization based on the journey of food. Later I completed my B.A in American Multicultural Studies, and sought to affect change through economic equity. I became a union organizer and deepened my understanding of social and interpersonal divisions that persist. My training in Theater of the Oppressed, Non-Violent Communication, Courage Conversations, Mindfulness and Certified Diversity Professional Coaching allows me to hold various racial and cultural identities with awareness, skill and presence, pointing individuals, groups, and folks within organizations to their own best selves.

I am beyond thrilled to embark on this journey with Ashnie. My ancestry includes the folks of England and North Western Europe. I would call myself (and my ancestors) colonizers and I aim to decolonize my mind and soul. A degree in theatre, a minor in education, and a master’s in counseling psychology bring me to where I am in the education sense. My intention is to walk along you. My belief is that folks find their own unique path toward healing.

The recent completion of one hundred and fifty hours of coursework centered around social justice at The Embody Lab and deeper mindfulness training with the folks at MNDFL offers a deeper well of somatic experiencing. I had to step up and out of the hetero-patriarchal “foundation” of my education in order to feel confident enough to offer this workshop exploring our conditioning. I am committed to creating mutual aid relationships with BIPOC members of my community and I explore my proximity to privilege daily.
